Spring is in the air – and so is that spring cleaning bug. But while you’re purging your closet and deep cleaning your baseboards, don’t forget your skincare. We have some tips from Midwest DERMaesthetics that will renew and revive tired, dry winter skin, leaving it fresh as a daisy!
CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES
Dirty makeup brushes can cause much more damage than simple breakouts. Using the same tools every day means that dead skin cells, dirt, pollution, and oil will accumulate. These can hold harmful bacteria – think staphylococcus, streptococcus, and E. Coli (not kidding). Good-quality makeup brushes can last for years, as long as you wash them like you’re supposed to. We hope you already do this weekly, but let’s get our spring cleaning started by washing all of your brushes and replacing applicators and sponges.
To correctly wash: Rinse in lukewarm water with a mild shampoo or brush cleaner, gently massage the bristles, and lay them flat on the edge of the counter to dry.
CHECK PRODUCT EXPIRATION DATES
Did you know most skincare products come with an expiration date? Products with more active ingredients like retinoids, growth factors, and antioxidants tend to lose their potency over time. Ingredients such as glycolic acid and retinol can also become more concentrated as they degrade and separate, increasing the likelihood of skin irritation. So, pay close attention to expiration dates and if there isn’t one, discard them six months after opening.
THROW OUT YOUR OLD SUNSCREEN
The worst sunburns often occur due to using expired sunscreen. Using last year’s sunscreen gives you a false sense of protection. And sunscreen needs to be in a controlled environment in order to be effective. When it doubt, throw it out!
