Sunscreen for Rejuvenation
A surprising finding shows that sunscreens not only protect the skin, they actually aid in age reversal!
We’ve been talking for years about anti-aging products and procedures that help undo damage caused by the sun – known as “photoaging”. Laser treatments, fillers and other injectables – and most recently antioxidant serums such as SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic – have been go-to remedies for fine lines, discoloration, and improvement to the skin’s texture after years of sun exposure. But dermatologists conducting a study found a new aid in repairing sun damaged skin. We’ve now learned that sunscreen not only protects the skin from the sun, but long term daily use actually works to reverse photoaging damage.
“Our hypothesis was that you wouldn’t see accelerated photodamage over the course of a year—that the skin would sort of ‘hold its own,’” says Michael Southall, research director and fellow of global skin biology and pharmacology at Johnson & Johnson Consumer, one of the authors of the study. “Not only did their skin not age, but we actually saw significant improvement in a number of parameters of photoaging.” Blinded assessments performed by dermatologists showed significant improvement in all photodamage parameters beginning at week 12 and continuing until the end of the study. The most significant improvement was in skin texture and pigmentation with a 40%-52% improvement over one year. There was also an 18%-34% reduction in fine lines.
