Easing the Eczema Dilemma

When it comes to cold-weather skin challenges, eczema is a bit of a “problem child” – and it has quite an extended family. Eczema isn’t a single condition but rather a group of related skin issues that share similar traits.

Thankfully, Midwest Dermatology is here to help. Our dermatologists not only know how to spot each unique form of eczema but also how to help you manage a condition that can evolve throughout your life.

What is Eczema?

In dermatology terms, “eczema” simply means “inflammation of the skin.” But what most people commonly call eczema is often atopic dermatitis—a type of eczema that tends to be more intense and long-lasting. Atopic dermatitis brings itchiness and redness and, in some cases, may also cause blistering, peeling, and oozing.

Since no two cases are alike, our Midwest Dermatology physicians start with a thorough evaluation by:

  • Reviewing your medical history
  • Examining your skin
  • Pinpointing your specific symptoms

With this information, your dermatologist can recommend a treatment based on where eczema appears on your body and your age.

Three Ways to Ease the Itch

While every treatment plan is personalized, our physicians use a three-step approach to help manage eczema effectively:

Step 1: Manage Dryness
A proper skincare regimen is key to adding moisture and locking it in. Eczema can show up on areas like the face, scalp, hands, chest, and inside the elbows, so this routine may take dedication, but the itch will remind you if you miss a day!

Pro Tip: When you shower, keep the bathroom door shut. Building steam reduces dryness in the air and helps your skin retain moisture.

Step 2: Manage the Itch
New prescription medications can reduce (or eliminate) the need to scratch. Trusted treatments include topical cortisone creams and new breakthrough options like Dupixent, a biologic medication that works by targeting specific inflammatory pathways. We also now have new FDA-approved drugs to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis. With so many choices, it’s important to work with a physician, and your Midwest Dermatology doc is here to help.

Pro Tip: For relief, try a moisturizer that includes ceramides and enzymes to support a healthy skin barrier. Look for options that also contain hyaluronic acid and plant-based lipids to hydrate and nourish dry, flaky, sensitive skin.

Step 3: Manage Your Triggers
Eczema is often set off by triggers like pet dander, cold air, scratchy fabrics, and even stress. We’ll help you identify and avoid any environmental triggers that might be aggravating your eczema and share the essential do’s and don’ts.

Pro Tip:  Choose non-irritating clothes and laundry detergent.  When skin feels dry and raw, even clothing and laundry detergent can cause irritation. If you need to wear wool or other scratchy fabrics, try layering with cotton or silk underneath. Choose laundry detergents labeled “hypoallergenic” or “for sensitive skin” to avoid fragrances and harsh ingredients that can aggravate sensitive skin.

Eczema can be a tough challenge, but it doesn’t have to be one of life’s big dilemmas. Ready to get started? Give Midwest Dermatology a call at (402) 933-0800 or book your appointment online, and we’ll help you put together a plan that’s right for you.
