Breakthrough Technology for Early Melanoma Detection Now Available at Midwest Dermatology

Despite our best efforts, we know we can’t keep you out of the sun all the time. And we aren’t really sure that’s the best approach to total wellness. So, the next best weapon we have up our sleeve is early detection—the process of finding minor, subtle changes in your moles and skin lesions that make us suspicious enough to test them with a skin biopsy.
Decades of Expertise
For decades, we’ve monitored thousands of moles and growths using magnifying loops, special lights, and the expertise of our highly trained board-certified, dual board-certified, and triple board-certified physicians to find suspicious changes and take action. And we’ve felt pretty good about it!
Introducing FotoFinder: A Game-Changer in Skin Cancer Detection
But now, a new tool has arrived in the fight against deadly melanomas and disfiguring carcinomas of the skin: High-resolution photography using the new FotoFinder Total Body Mapping. This technology stores your 360-degree full-body photos and uses advanced software to compare images year over year, highlighting any changes. Just wow! It’s a game-changer, helping us monitor patients with a personal or family history of skin cancer, or those with a clinically high number of moles. Anyone interested in getting on top of early detection can get mole mapping with FotoFinder.
How FotoFinder Works
Imagine your skin as a landscape. FotoFinder Automated Total Body Mapping is the photographer that captures images of almost your entire skin surface. The FotoFinder ATBM system creates a “body map” of your skin lesions by taking high-resolution photographs of your body systematically—from head to toe—within just minutes. The results are reviewed by a physician at Midwest Dermatology, who will identify lesions of concern and determine the next steps to provide the best possible care for you.
Annual Skin Exams Still Essential
FotoFinder is not a substitute for your annual skin exam. Be sure to schedule a yearly check-up with your dermatologist to review results and for a visual examination for extra reassurance. And speaking of that, rest assured knowing that FotoFinder stores your high-resolution photographs and will compare your next set of findings with the last, allowing us to catch those telltale changes early.
Scheduling Your FotoFinder Session
Now, let’s get down to the business of scheduling. Here are a few important things to know:
- No Need to be an Established Patient: You do not have to be an established patient to get your FotoFinder computer-assisted mole mapping done at Midwest Dermatology. You will be added to our system and become a patient here, but you can have results sent to another dermatology practice if that’s your preference.
- Easy Scheduling Options: You can schedule by calling (402) 933-0800 or using our online scheduling option at midwestderm.com.
- Insurance Information: Sometimes your insurance will cover the cost of FotoFinder. If not, we will ask you to pay $250.00 for the service. If you have a personal or family history of skin cancer, insurance is more likely to cover it. Some insurance carriers require preauthorization before your appointment, and it is up to you to contact your carrier and ask about that process. Know your insurance and take action beforehand to ensure the best chance that they will pay.
The Importance of Early Detection
The 5-year survival rate for malignant melanoma is 99% when treated early enough. That’s good news, especially considering the expected increase in melanoma diagnoses is 7.3% in 2024, likely exceeding 200,000 in the U.S. this year.
Schedule an annual skin check. Book an annual FotoFinder Mole Mapping session. Know the warning signs of melanoma and get checked out whenever anything looks suspicious. Wear sunscreen and follow other prevention strategies. Just don’t give up and let it happen to you.
