For years, BOTOX® Cosmetic has been the “face” of neuromodulators, also known as botulinum toxin injections. Dysport® is very similar to BOTOX® Cosmetic but with a slight difference in the potency of trace proteins and recommended areas for use. For example, many women and men seek treatment for furrows between the brows. Using a few injections around the eyes and forehead, Dysport® blocks signals from the brain to the muscles surrounding these lines, preventing the deep furrows from forming. Over time, the face relaxes and wrinkles soften. If you have a persistent “angry” look from these frown lines, Dysport® may be just the answer.

Which One Is Right for You?

When it comes to comparing these two popular neuromodulators, there are as many similarities as there are differences. Both contain a protein called botulinum toxin type A which is the main active ingredient.  They work the same way but on a different molecular level.

Dysport® contains extra proteins that give it a slightly lower molecular weight, resulting in a lighter and less potent formulation. But it is a myth to say that Dysport® is a lighter version of BOTOX® Cosmetic. It is, however, true that a patient may require more Dysport® to achieve the same result.

Dysport® does a faster onset of just 24 hours compared to three to five days for BOTOX® Cosmetic, which may make it a better choice for targeting specific areas. But which one lasts longer? The answer is that they both perform well. Both are absorbed by the body over time and results usually last about three months.

Some patients may discover that one formula lasts longer than the other, which prompts them to switch to that formula permanently. When treatments last longer, patients save money by prolonging the time needed for maintenance treatments.  The great news is that you can schedule a treatment for either one of these treatments if the other is not effective or stops working as effectively over time.  It is not uncommon for patients to switch between the two.
