AGING SKIN

It’s a simple fact that skin changes with age. As years go by, wrinkles and spots develop, skin dries out and skin loses fat, which makes it less full and smooth.

Exposure to sunlight is the major external cause of aging skin. Even just a few minutes of sun exposure a day, added up over years, can cause noticeable changes in skin, including:

  • Freckles and age spots
  • Rough and leathery skin
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Loose or sagging skin
  • Actinic keratosis, or pre-cancers

Of course, the amount of damage done by the sun combines with every individual’s personal genetic factors, and other external factors. As skin experiences repeated exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays and grows older, it loses the ability to repair itself.

Treating Aging Skin

Midwest Dermatology offers several treatments that can successfully rejuvenate skin and erase the visible signs of aging skin. One of our board-certified dermatologists will recommend one, or a combination of the following treatments, to help you achieve a more youthful-looking appearance:

Fractional laser skin treatment allows physicians to deliver thousands of tiny laser light pulses to an area of skin in just one treatment. During the treatment, microbeams of laser light erase discoloration like age spots on the skin’s surface, smooth lines and wrinkles, help tighten skin and also stimulate the development of new collagen. Because surrounding tissue is left intact, skin cells actually bridge across to other tissue, creating healthy, new skin. The result is skin that is smoother, firmer and more youthful-looking.

Midwest Dermatology offers three types of fractional laser treatment: Active FX, Deep FX and Total FX.

Active FX treatment is used when skin shows moderate signs of aging. Using a CO2 laser, the Midwest Dermatology team uses FX delivery to resolve or lessen the appearance of:

  • Fine lines and moderate wrinkles on the face
  • Loose eyelid skin
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Pucker marks around the mouth and lips
  • Brown spots or uneven skin tone
  • Superficial scars and acne scarring
  • Loose skin around the neck, chin and jowls

Active FX treatment often requires only a single session. Patients go home afterward and can return to their normal lifestyle less than a week later.

Deep FX treatment is used when skin shows significant signs of aging. The laser beams go deeper, which makes it effective at resolving or lessening the appearance of:

  • Moderate to deep wrinkles on the face
  • Furrows and noticeable facial lines
  • Loose eyelid skin
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Pucker marks around the mouth and lips
  • Brown spots or uneven skin tone
  • Scars, including deeper, cystic acne scars
  • Loose skin around the neck, chin and jowls

Deep FX treatment may require only a single session. Patients go home afterward and can return to their normal lifestyle about a week later.

Total FX treatment combines Active FX and Deep FX into a single, enhanced procedure. Patients see the benefits of both treatments – resolution of brown spots and skin discoloration on the skin’s surface and tightening of facial skin and smoothing of wrinkles.

Total FX is also considered an effective treatment for cystic acne scarring.

DERMAL FILLERS FOR WRINKLES

When we age, wrinkles, lines and folds in the skin come with the territory. But today’s dermal fillers can turn back the clock and help patients achieve a more youthful looking appearance without surgery.

Patients can choose from:

  • BOTOX Cosmetic – BOTOX Cosmetic is an injectable solution that works below the skin’s surface to target the underlying muscle activity that causes frown lines and crow’s feet. The result is a reduction and smoothing of pronounced facial lines for up to 6 months.
  • Juvederm – Juvederm is a smooth, injectable gel filler that gently reverses the signs of aging by replacing the hyaluronic acid that is naturally found in younger skin. Juvederm is an ideal way to treat the “parentheses” skin folds that surround the nose and mouth and delivers long-lasting results of up to 1 year.
  • Restylane – Designed to smooth deeper wrinkles and replenish the volume of sagging skin, Restylane is an injectable filler solution that also contains the hyaluronic acid responsible for the firm skin of youth. An added benefit: because Restylane is non-animal based, there’s no chance of an allergic reaction and over time it is absorbed back into the body. Restylane is long-lasting, too. You can go up to 9 months in between treatments.
